2015, Color pencils on printed photomanipulation
24,9 x 11 cm. (9,8 x 4,3 inches)

© Matteo Bocci

Last year I was lucky enough to visit Providence (Rhode Island), the beautiful city where Lovecraft was born. Enraptured by the peculiar atmosphere of the place, I took a lot of pictures with my camera, in order to manipulate them and create some Lovecraftian artworks. Anyway, when I started to use digital techniques on my picture I felt like something was missing: a genuine handmade touch. So I printed the photomanipulated picture and started to use pencils on it, trying to achieve the result I was looking for. This work was then chosen to partecipate to the Ars Necronomica 2015 Exposition in Providence and I think nothing could have made me happier than that. Hope you like it. It was a lot of fun to do.

Aloha Matteo, we are launching a project to connect a community of artists and writers that can enjoy each other's written and visual art and hopefully network to collaborate, appreciate, and inspire in the Lovecraftian tradition.

Everyone that contributes to or brings others into our anthology project will receive a free copy of the Lovecraft ebook anthology. All you have to do is visit our website
here  and sign up. All of the rules and deadlines are listed.

We look forward to seeing your work!

Cthulhu fhtagn,

Hi - I thought I'd let you know that I purchased this piece of yours at the Ars Necronomica.  It caught my eye immediately and I decided I had to acquire it.  Also, you should know that it was photographed and published (twice!) by the Providence Journal in their August 20th article covering the Ars Necronomica.  It just arrived in the mail yesterday and I'm trying to decide the best prominent spot for it.

When I was a child, I used to have dreams where I'd wander through cities and towns. Each time I woke up, I'd realize that the cities I dreamt of weren't completely normal and were somewhat distorted in color or shape or atmosphere. I have always wanted to see a real life representation of one of those cities from my childhood dreams. I think this is one of them and its so nice and interesting to see. Nice to marvel at the abilities of human imagination. Great job.

I love that you placed a religious figure in the middle of the painting, surrounded by the creature. Really lovely touch, and a beautiful style overall!

I haven't read much Lovecraft except for a short story and a lot of works based on his works, but this piece feels as if it contains the essence of Lovecraft's creepy mind.

Excellent!!  I knew the location from just the small thumbnail, it's a street I used to walk by for eight years. And, if I am not mistaken, isn't that the same gallery where this art will be exhibited?  I went to Necronomicon two years back, and 1/3 of the art show was hosted in one of the buildings on the right.  No matter what, this is one of the nicest images I've seen of this area. :)

Thank you so much, Paul! The building hosting the exhibition, the Providence Art, is exactly in Thomas Street. I'm really glad you like how this one came out. Unfortunately I couldn't be in Providence for the NecronomiCon, but people at the PAC is great and was very kind and helpful even if I did not meet them in person. Hope to partecipate to the 2017 edition!
